Serve Beyond the Church
Community Ministries
Southminster members are committed to partnering with local and state organizations to end homelessness, address food insecurity, and care for our neighbors. We serve through hands-on volunteering and generous financial giving.
We partner with GBM to provide food, clothing and financial assistance to those facing crisis. Non-perishable items for the food pantry are collected at Southminster every Sunday, and we contribute Christmas gifts and bicycles for children each Christmas.
We partner with Habitat for Humanity to build and improve homes for families in the Birmingham area.
Through Firehouse Ministries, we support shelter and other services for men facing homelessness. As part of our partnership, we serve dinner at Firehouse about six times each year.
Through First Light, we support shelter and other services for women and children facing homelessness. As part of our partnership, we serve dinner at First Light about six times each year.
Serving the whole state of Alabama, PHFC helps homeless families and teens find safe shelter and make the transition into more sustainable housing situations. Southminster serves as a drop off location for PHFC’s thrift store on the first Saturday of each month.
Global Ministries
We support the work of the Christian Medical Institute of Kasai as well as partner churches in the Kananga area of Congo through our presbytery’s long-standing mission partnership.
Each year we partner with other PCUSA churches to pack 20,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger. These meals are sent to partner organizations all across the globe.
Café Justo is a grower-owned coffee cooperative based in southern Chiapas, Mexico, formed to address poverty and migration from Mexico to the U.S.A. We proudly serve Café Justo at our church events and invite our community to buy from Café Justo to serve at home.
